uninstall MSN.com home page?

Q.
How do I get rid of or uninstall MSN.com home page? I want Yahoo but everytime I change it to Yahoo.com that darn MSN.COM home page comes back. It's a pain.

A.
There are a few reasons for this. The first is that you have selected your home page with a link rather than within your software. Most people who do this within their browser settings can have fewer problems. We would know more about your problem if we knew what browser you were using, whether you are using MSN software, etc. The MSN software, for example, may have a hidden setting that "hijacks" your homepage.

In Firefox (or Mozilla or Netscape), go to your desired homepage and select Tools --> Options --> General. Then select "use current page."

In IE, it is very similar. Go to your desired homepage, select Tools --> Internet Options --> General. Select "use current page."

If this does not solve your problem, then what you might have is a more complicated issue that involves spyware or the MSN software itself. Many spyware programs have scripts that hijack your homepage to something that they want. The puzzling thing is that you don't generally see a piece of software hijacking to the MSN site. That's why it may be an MSN setting. When possible, I set up my internet connections to work independent of the branded software; in most cases, the branded software is full of bloated settings that can do things like take your homepage. I am not familiar enough with the MSN software to say. If you are on a dialup connection, you could simply look up your phone number and create a dialup connection that works by itself. You can do this by going into your control panel, selecting network connections, and selecting "create a new connection." There is a wizard that will walk you through this process.

XP Hot Fixes

Q:
In my add and remove programs I have at least 40-50 Windows XP Hot Fixes. Can I remove these or not? Please let me know...

A:
Do not remove any of the "Hotfix" listings. You only have one SP2; it is listed as Windows XP Service Pack 2, not as a "Hotfix".

The 17 "Hotfix" listings are updates that have been done subsequent to installing SP2.

Thank you for you question.

“Just push F1”

Read the directions is something I almost never do. I bungle through it, but if all else fails I have to give in. I think there was a movie out called “Just Push Play”, in computer land, its called “ Just push F1”. This is very good advice, but ………. Well you know.

I have this new notebook computer with the wireless WiFi built into it. Last night I was in my easy chair surfing and all at once the big bubble pops up stating, “No Network Connection”. I just thought one of my access points had quit but after a look at both of then I thought they were working OK. I rebooted and done all the control panel things you do, but no luck. Discussed I went to bed.

Here it is 7 A.M. and I boot the machine up while getting a cup of coffee. Yep, no internet connection. I had a big brain storm idea, I could install an external WiFi USB thumb device. I loaded the software, plugged in the little jewel and KAZAM “we have whales”, or in this case, a working WiFi. OK, now I could tell customer service that it was the computer at fault, not the network.

I hate to call customer service but you must if you need the warranty service. I typed in HP dot com and began looking for the toll free phone number. This led me through several pages of print trying to get me to do the trouble shooting thing. Well to make a long story short, I did the trouble shooting thing that never works.

I think number two on the list of things to check was “Make sure the WiFi button is turned on”. I’m thinking, “I don’t have no stink’n WiFi button”. I began to look on the back and sides of the machine and OH NO, there is a button marked with the WiFi logo ((Y)) one little push and the blue LED comes on telling me it is now connected to the network.

The moral of this little story, swallow your pride and “Just push F1”.
